Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has died

february 6 2008

Just a few hours ago Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, leader of the Transcendental Meditation movement, died at the age of 91.
Last week he retreated into near silence and turned his responsibilities of running the movement to 48 younger people.
Preparation for this started years ago. He educated them with care.
His teaching are written down and put on tape, so he consolidated his teaching well enabling the movement to proceed without changes.

Little is known about his youth.
He didn't care about that part of his life.

In 1957 he started teaching meditation in India.
The Beatles visited him at his Ashram in India in 1968 and made him famous.
They were impressed by him, even though he got rather angry when he discovered they used drugs at his ashram.

5 million people studied the meditation technique and many still practice it today.

Maharishi means great seer.
He often said that peace can be created in the world by bringing light.
"Don't fight darkness", he said. "Bring light, and darkness can't excist any longer."

In 1990 he moved to Vlodrop, a town in the south of The Netherlands.
The last week many of his followers attended a congress at Vlodrop, and hundreds were still present at Vlodrop when he died of old age.

May he rest in peace.
